When a frictionless 3D Secure 2 transaction is soft declined due to the issuer indicating they require further information to verify the consumer's identity, the payment flow is automatically ‘stepped up’ to follow the challenge flow.
Step Up Authentication will automatically re-submit the soft declined transaction, after re-authenticating the cardholder with a mandated challenge. The cardholder is presented with a 3D Secure 2 challenge screen to re-authenticate and process the transaction.
