A pre-authorisation is a transaction that reserves / holds an amount on a cardholder's account.

Pre-authorisations can be used as a check, usually with a small amount, to ensure the card is valid or to hold the full amount of the transaction.

For example, a taxi may take a pre-auth of £1.00 when you book, before taking the final amount at the end of your journey.
